In South Africa, it is required that all buildings, including homes, are to be erected in accordance with the National Building Regulations (NBR) and Building Standards Act of 1977 to ensure both technical and quality standards are maintained.

The Council will facilitate the registration of Building Inspectors (BI) with the purposes of:

• Establishing a foundation for the professionalisation of BI’s;
• Standardising the scope of service for stakeholders; and
• Legitimising the Building Inspectorate occupational practice.
